The deal includes plans to launch a Major League Rugby mobile app before the 2021 MLR season begins March 20. The app’s second development phase includes plans to add augmented reality fan features.
U.K.-based PT SportSuite has previously provided its digital asset management and workflow software to the British & Irish Lions rugby union team and the Six Nations rugby competition, but MLR is the company’s first North American client. Last year’s MLR season was canceled in March due to COVID-19.
TikTok Enters the Octagon Through UFC Deal

TikTok has struck a multi-year deal with the UFC to host exclusive livestreamed content on the social media app. UFC’s TikTok account will post weekly behind-the-scenes content featuring fighters, including videos before and after fights.
TikTok will begin posting UFC content leading up to the Blaydes vs. Lewis fight on Feb. 20. The UFC headquarters in Las Vegas will also funnel resources into boosting the league’s engagement on TikTok.
The @UFC account has over 6.3 million followers, the third largest following of a major sports league on the platform. The @UFCRussia, @UFCBrasil and @UFCEurope accounts will also share content as part of the partnership.
TikTok has emerged as a desirable streaming platform for professional leagues. The NFL streamed its Super Bowl LV pregame show, headlined by Miley Cyrus, on TikTok; the platform will also sponsor UEFA’s Euro “2020” soccer tournament this summer.
Professional Fighters League Raises $65M Before 2021 Season

The Professional Fighters League raised a $65 million financing round, bringing the MMA circuit’s total investment to $175 million. The new capital will help fuel the league’s international expansion, product innovation, and talent acquisition
Leading the $65 million round was Ares Capital, Knighthead Capital, and Elysian Park Ventures (the private equity firm owned by the Los Angeles Dodgers). In November, the PFL secured a deal with IBM to power data for the league’s SmartCage broadcast product that shows on-screen data such as kick speed and punch speed during fights. PFL fights air on ESPN2 and stream on ESPN+.
The PFL, which held its inaugural season in 2018, has an ownership group that includes Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis and Washington Nationals owner Mark Lerner. The league’s 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic; its 2021 season is scheduled to begin April 23 in Las Vegas.
Toronto Blue Jays to Open 2021 MLB Season in Florida

The Toronto Blue Jays will begin the 2021 MLB season at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Fla., due to the ongoing closure of the Canada-U.S. border. The team will play its “home” games south of the border through May 2, though where the team will play after that remains undetermined.
A Thursday announcement from the Blue Jays said the club hopes to have fans in Rogers Centre, its regular venue, this summer. Last season, the Blue Jays were permitted to hold training camp in Toronto, but they played regular-season home games in Buffalo, N.Y. due to border restrictions. The NBA’s Toronto Raptors, who also initially planned to only begin their season in Florida, will now complete their remaining 2021 home schedule in Tampa.
“The alternatives for our season lie with some combination of Dunedin, Buffalo and Toronto,” Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro told the AP.
PGA Tour Live To Show All 32,000 Shots at The Players Championship

PGA Tour Live subscribers and recent attendees of The Players Championship will be able to watch all shots (some 32,000) of this year’s tournament live for the first time when it starts on March 11.
The aptly named Every Shot Live feature had been slated to debut during last year’s Players Championship before the emerging coronavirus pandemic canceled the event after its first day. All PGA Tour Live users on NBC Sports Gold will be able to access the comprehensive coverage, and fans who bought tickets to the 2019 and 2020 editions of The Players Championship will be offered a free one-week trial of PGA Tour Live so they can tune in.
NBC Sports Group will use nearly 120 cameras across the TPC Sawgrass course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., for The Players Championship. PGA Tour Live, which moved to NBC Sports Gold in 2019 but will shift to ESPN+ beginning in 2022, will offer a separate livestream for each of the 24 initial playing groups.
NHL Adds Bally’s As Sports Betting Partner

Casino operator Bally’s Corporation has signed a multi-year deal to become an official sports betting partner of the NHL. Bally’s joins PointsBet, FanDuel, William Hill, and BetMGM as sportsbooks to have partnered with the NHL.
Bally’s will create content to be integrated into live coverage of NHL games on 19 regional sports networks as part of the deal. In November, Bally’s partnered with Sinclair Broadcast Group to acquire the naming rights to the 21 regional sports networks formerly owned by Fox Sports.
The NHL is the first sports league to form a sports betting partnership with Bally’s, which operates 11 U.S. casinos. Bally’s recent push into online gaming includes its acquisitions of daily fantasy site Monkey Knife Fight and sports betting software provider Bet.Works. Earlier this month, Bally’s also bought free-to-play game provider SportCaller.
“With its Sinclair Broadcast Group partnership combined with a strong strategic vision for its portfolio of sports betting products, Bally’s is an ideal partner for the NHL to further engage our avid fan base on a national and local level,” NHL chief business offer Keith Wachtel said in a statement.
Russell Westbrook Leads $63 Million Investment in Varo Bank App

Washington Wizards point guard Russell Westbrook has joined digital banking platform Varo Bank as an investor and advisor. The nine-time All-Star led Varo’s $63 million funding round, which was announced today.
Varo aims to provide affordable banking services to individuals who’ve been traditionally underserved by America’s financial system. Varo Bank is a member of the FDIC and is the first digital-only U.S. bank to receive national charter status. “I am excited and ready to work with Varo to be a part of an economic revitalization for those who never had the access they deserved,” says Westbrook, who made his investment through Russell Westbrook Enterprises.
Westbrook isn’t the only NBA player to recently invest in financial technology; his former Oklahoma City Thunder co-star Kevin Durant invested in the financial literacy app, Brigit, last month. Another mobile banking app, Goalsetter, recently partnered with the NBA Players Association to open savings accounts for Black and Brown youth across the U.S.
Advanced Sports Instruments Debuts New Wearable Device

Advanced Sports Instruments is releasing its latest tracking device, AdMosLive, which transmits directly from the wearable to the cloud for real-time data collection without the need for antennas or other synchronization. Swiss-based ASI, which is best known for its FIFA-certified FieldWiz GPS tracker, configured its new release to remove latency and save time for coaches and practitioners.
ASI intentionally did not construct a standard software interface for AdMosLive to enable the user to benefit from an integrated experience. AdMosLive will send data via an open API to any athlete management system; Deepsports.io, PLF Team Sports and TrainMyAthlete are among those to have already partnered with ASI.
“We designed an open API allowing any third-party platform to consume raw or calculated data in real time or post-session,” Lionel Yersin, ASI founder and CTO, said in a statement. “Data can be accessed simultaneously by several solutions which creates opportunities to explore new use cases in the fields of performance and fan engagement.”
MLB Ballparks Get WiFi Upgrade From Extreme Networks

Major League Baseball has partnered with network equipment company Extreme Networks, which has become the league’s official WiFi solutions provider. Extreme Networks will provide 16 MLB ballparks with in-stadium WiFi and consumer analytics through the installation of ExtremeWireless cloud-enabled access points.
Extreme will also upgrade the network at MLB’s Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Fla., and it will also work with MLB on programs that empower the advancement of women in sports technology. Ballpark network installations will begin this year and run through 2026, with Boston’s Fenway Park being the first MLB venue to run on Extreme’s WiFi 6 connectivity.
Minnesota Twins Add 3M As Science Partner to Help Fans Return to Target Field

The Minnesota Twins have named Saint Paul-based 3M its new official science partner. The manufacturing conglomerate will collaborate with the Twins on developing health and safety protocols in hopes of allowing fans to return to Target Field this MLB season amid the pandemic.
As part of the new relationship, 3M will supply Twins ballpark operations with its cleaning and disinfectant solutions; it will also study such matters as the stadium’s ingress and egress in order to ensure proper social distancing.
The reigning AL Central division champion Twins will play their first home game on April 8. The Twins have stated their intention to have some fans at Target Field this season; the club is working with the governor and state department of health to devise a plan.
VICIS Makes Position-Specific Helmet For Linemen

Helmet manufacturer VICIS announced its first position-specific football helmet, the Zero2 Trench, which is designed to be worn by offensive and defensive linemen. The Trench is built on the foundation of VICIS’ recently launched Zero2 helmet, but it replaces the RFLX impact structure with an absorption system designed to respond to the head impacts that linemen exchange on every snap.
According to VICIS’ review of player impact data, linemen experience more than twice as many head impacts per game compared to other football positions, with most blows to the front of the helmet at a low velocity. “Knowing there are more linemen on the field than any other position, they were a natural starting point for our first position-specific helmet,” VICIS VP of product development Jason Neubauer said in a statement.
The NFL Engineering Committee has researched the potential benefits of position-specific helmets since 2017. Some NFL players, including free agent center Justin Britt, plan to wear the Trench helmet next season. VICIS helmets were worn by more than 200 NFL players before the company endured financial troubles in 2019, which led to it being sold to Innovatus Capital Partners.
