UK's Eurovision entry revealed ahead of socially-distanced Rotterdam show

The UK has selected singer James Newman - brother of chart-topper John Newman - for 2021's Eurovision song contest after 2020's show was cancelled amid the pandemic

The act representing us in the contest later this year will be none other than James Newman - returning for duty after 2020's show was ditched.

James - older brother of hitmaker John Newman - was lined up at the end of February last year, just three weeks before the UK was plunged into the first lockdown.

Now bosses are hoping to pull off a socially distanced show in Rotterdam in May, with James taking to the stage on behalf of his native Blighty.

After his track My Last Breath earned critical acclaim last year, he's been tasked with writing a fresh tune for the contest.

And having penned tracks for the likes of Ed Sheeran and Little Mix, his prospects are solid.

James told The Sun : "I'm so excited and honoured to be getting a second chance at representing my country in the Eurovision Song Contest.

"I haven't stopped making new music in lockdown and I can't wait for everyone to hear the song I'm taking to Eurovision in 2021."

Most Read

A music industry insider added to the publication: "James has been writing songs non-stop to create the perfect single for the contest and is planning on unveiling it next month.

"It has been a tough year for everybody, including James, who was struck down with Covid last March, but it's made him even more determined to make a belter of a song."

If the show can't go ahead again, bosses have organised plans for artists to perform from their own countries, which will be beamed into the main event.

It will mark the first Eurovision since 2019, when nearly 8 million Brits tuned into the Tel Aviv show.

And James' is hopeful of his Eurovision chances, sharing last May: "I'm a firm believer in visualising what you want to achieve in life so I was imagining myself standing on stage winning, because you've got to.

"I started something and I really want to finish it. I was on such a journey.

"If I got the opportunity to go next year I would love to."

Don’t miss

The Eurovision Song Contest will return on May 22.

Languages

Languages form an important part of the ESCP Bachelor in Management (BSc), with the aim being that all students have gained proficiency in an additional two languages upon graduation.

To make this possible, we provide in-class and digital language courses that are adapted to each student’s level during the three years of the programme. Moreover, starting from the second semester of the second year, some courses in Madrid and Paris will be taught in Spanish and French respectively. In the third year some of the elective courses will be offered in German, with the option of selecting electives taught in English.

Thesis

The Bachelor thesis is a further opportunity for students to enhance the learning and skills gained from the programme and deepen both knowledge and understanding of their chosen field in management.

Each thesis project is supervised and guided by a member of the Faculty or expert in the relevant field. The thesis can be written in English, German, French, Italian or Spanish, and is guided by faculty in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris and Turin - again reflecting the international dimension of the programme

Careers

Careers service

The ESCP Careers Service helps students identify their professional objectives to ensure their career prospects.

Located on each of the six campuses, the Careers Service provides students with the advice, data and tools to connect them with over 30,000 internship opportunities each year.

Testimonial

Patricia Madej ( Germany/Ukraine)
Track: London - Madrid - Paris

"My studies at ESCP helped me find in which direction I wanted to go for my professional career, something I did not know back when I finished High School. Through internships, my interest in Finance became apparent, so I decided to do an Apprenticeship at a Fund Management Company in Paris."

Internships and Social Impact Projects are a crucial component of the BSc programme and are highly valued by potential employers.

Internships

Securing an internship during (or a job after) university is becoming increasingly competitive.

Thanks to ESCP’s strong links with the corporate world, students are offered internships across a range of sectors, including Marketing & Communications, Banking & Finance, Consulting, Food & Beverage, Luxury Brands, E-commerce & IT, Automotive, Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare, Energy & Chemicals, and NGOs.

Recruitment processes are constantly evolving, focusing less on technical knowledge and more on assessing the applicant’s ability to work in a team, their analytical thinking, organisational skills and leadership potential.

For this reason, the BSc curriculum offers a number of personal or “soft” skills workshops to address areas such as presentation techniques and communication competencies.

Testimonial

Laurent Hoegl-Roy ( Switzerland/France/Germany)
Track: London - Paris - Berlin

"During my first year as a Bachelor in Management student I managed to land an internship with Airbus! I felt well- prepared for my interviews thanks to the Careers Service, and ultimately I was selected to do a three-month internship at Airbus Defence and Space in Lean Management and Process Optimisation. My internship was even better than I imagined it; I not only gained some new skills, but I also learned a lot about the industry."

Social Impact Projects

Instead of the second-year Internship, students can opt to complete a Social Impact Project, particularly relevant for students interested in future work with not- for-profit organisations.

Students are encouraged to reflect upon pressing social problems, and focus on the growing realisation that sustainable social impact can best be achieved by applying creative management solutions.

Events

The Careers Service hosts a range of events for students each year to help them define and refine their career plans, obtain valuable information, and learn about different job opportunities internationally.

These events include:

  • Career workshops
  • Company presentations, seminars, conferences, roundtables and interviews with recruiters
  • On-campus general and industry-specific job fairs attracting over 130 companies throughout the year
  • Bootcamps on Consulting, Banking, Tech and Marketing led by ESCP Alumni on how to be recruited by the leading companies in these sectors

Alumni

Building relationships and networks is essential. The ESCP Alumni Association, through its 60,000 active alumni in 150 countries, will help you build strong connections and gain valuable insight into companies and recruiters around the world.
Our Alumni are involved with the Careers Service by attending career and networking events, and offering mentorships, company presentations and industry bootcamps.
