Australian Open 2020 Tennis TV Channels Broadcasting

Novak Djokovic
World no. 2 Novak Djokovic won’t just be the defending champion when he returns to the Australian Open in 2020 — he will be the all-time title leader, having broken a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Roy Emerson when he delivered a brilliant beatdown of Rafael Nadal in the 2019 final. Now holding 16 Grand Slams overall, Djokovic is rapidly closing the gap on rivals Federer and Nadal — will he continue to do so at the 2020 Australian Open?

Naomi Osaka
Having been ranked outside the top 70 12 months previously, Naomi Osaka completed a meteoric rise to the very top of the rankings when she won her second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, defeating Petra Kvitova in a thrilling three-set final. The first player since Jennifer Capriati almost 20 years previously to win her first two major titles at back-to-back Grand Slams, the sky is surely the limit for Osaka — can she complete a successful title defence in 2020?

Rafael Nadal
The 2009 champion Rafael Nadal once again fell short in his attempt to become the second man in the Open Era to win all Grand Slams at least twice when he was beaten by Djokovic in straight sets in the final — but his dominant run to the final without dropping a set shows there’s plenty of life in Nadal’s Australian Open career, especially after his devastating run of form to end 2019 as the World №1.

Petra Kvitova
Seven years after she reached her first Australian Open semifinal, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova did it again — and went one better, reaching her maiden Melbourne final without dropping a set in a series of dazzling performances. The left-hander even staged a gallant fightback in the final, saving three championship points to drag Osaka to a third set. She said after the final that she wanted to win the title but had already won two years ago when she survived a knife attack in her home and managed to rebuild her career despite severe injuries to her playing hand — can she find the same magic in Melbourne in 2020?

Roger Federer
The 2017–18 champion found himself on the losing end of a generation clash with new star Stefanos Tsitsipas — a man 17 years his junior — in the round of 16 and exited the Australian Open before the quarterfinals, then ignited speculation in some quarters and hysteria in others with his announcement that he would be playing the French Open in 2019 after skipping it in previous years. The 38-year-old is back for the 2020 Australian Open — and remains a legitimate threat to win a seventh title.

Australian Open 2021: Match schedule, latest results and how to watch on TV in the UK

Australian Open round-by-round schedule, latest scores and how to watch the 2021 tournament

After a three-week delay from its traditional start date, the Australian Open is reaching the business end of the tournament.

Tournament director Craig Tiley had the unenviable task of working alongside public health experts to manage the arrival of over 1,200 players and officials into the country on 15 charter flights with participants facing a strict two-week period in quarantine.

But despite the disruption, the first major of the year is nearly complete.

How are the big names getting on?

Serena Williams bid a tearful farewell to the Australian Open amid questions about whether she may have played at the tournament for the last time.

Williams gave the crowd inside the Rod Laver Arena a long wave goodbye with her hand on her heart following her 6-3, 6-4 semi-final defeat by Naomi Osaka.

The gesture prompted speculation about whether the 39-year-old would ever be back competing at Melbourne Park, where she has won the title seven times.

In her post-match press conference, Williams, who had never previously lost a semi-final in Melbourne, responded: "I don't know. If I ever say farewell, I wouldn't tell anyone. So. "

Osaka, champion in 2018, will play American Jennifer Brady in Saturday's final. The latter withstood late drama to defeat Karolina Muchova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and reach her first grand slam final.

Novak Djokovic was the first finalist after the top seed beat surprise Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev in straight sets.

And he will meet Russian Daniil Medvedev after he came through the challenge of Stefanos Tsitsipas.

How have the Brits got on?

It was not a good start for the Brits as Katie Boulter fell to Daria Kasatkina in the first round 6-1 6-4 on the opening day. Twenty four hours later and British No1 Johanna Konta was forced to retire in the second set of her match against Slovenia's Kaja Juvan due to an abdominal injury.

Francesca Jones, on her Grand Slam main-draw debut, made a promising start against American Shelby Rogers before eventually losing 6-4, 6-1 to a player ranked almost 200 places higher. It left only Heather Watson as the sole female Briton in the main draw, the 28-year-old putting lack of preparation aside to beat Kristyna Pliskova and reach the second round. That was where her adventures ended, however, as she lost to Anett Kontaveit 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2.

In the men's draw, Cameron Norrie won the opening-round Battle of the Brits, beating 30th seed and British No1 Dan Evans 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to reach the second round for the first time. He then defeated Russia's Roman Safiullin in four sets to reach the last 32 for the first time but came up against Nadal, who ended his - and British - hopes in straight sets.

There is better news in the doubles however with British representation guaranteed in the men's doubles final. Jamie Murray and his partner Bruno Soares take on defending champions Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram in the semi-finals. Salisbury is also in the semi-finals of the mixed doubles alongside Desirae Krawczyk.

Who is missing at the Australian Open?

Roger Federer is the most high-profile absentee from Melbourne Park as he continues his recovery from double knee surgery in 2020.

Former British No 1 Andy Murray also misses the event after testing positive for Covid-19 and not being able to reach an agreement with the organisers over quarantining.

American John Isner opted to skip the tournament because he didn't want to be away from his family for an extended period of time.

In the women's draw, Kiki Bertens is out with injury while Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova withdrew after a positive coronavirus test.

Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska tested positive for a banned substance and appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. However, the world No 29 lost her battle and will now depart from Australia, having travelled in the hope of winning her case.

Where to watch the Australian Open 2021 on TV

Eurosport has the rights to broadcast live action from Melbourne.

New innovations

The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam to have electronic shot callers, instead of line judges, on every match court for the duration of the event.

Remote tracking cameras around the courts will automatically send the audio line calls, voiced by Australian front-line workers and other emergency services personnel, in real-time.

Australian Open 2021: Zeitplan, Termine und Übertragung im Live-TV und im Stream - Finale am 21.2.21

Australian Open 2021: Das erste Grand-Slam-Turnier des Jahres startete am 8. Februar 2021 und nicht, wie ursprünglich geplant, am 18. Januar 2021.

Mehrmalige Corona-Tests stehen zudem an.

Australian Open 2021: Das Preisgeld

What is the Format of ATP Cup?

The ATP Cup is a team-based tournament with 12 countries, divided into four groups, taking part. There will be three teams in a group, who will play each other in a round-robin format, with the four group winners progressing to the semi-finals.

Each tie between countries is decided by two singles matches and a doubles match. Both singles and doubles will be best-of-three sets matches. In a slight change in rules, the doubles matches will have ‘No-Ad’ scoring – which means that in case of deuce (40-40), the pair winning the subsequent point is deemed to have won the game.
